Hon. Dr Chris Fearne

Minister for Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Malta

Hon. Chris Fearne is the Minister for Foreign and European Affairs. He has been a Member of Parliament for the Labour Party since 2013 and, throughout his political career, has served in several ministerial roles, including as Deputy Prime Minister of Malta, Minister for Health, and Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection.

Prior to his current appointment, Hon. Fearne also served as Leader of the House and chaired the Foreign and European Affairs Committee at the Maltese House of Representatives. He was also a member of the Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance and, in 2023, was appointed President of the World Health Assembly.

Before entering politics, Hon. Fearne worked as a doctor and surgeon for more than thirty years, during which he held the position of Consultant Paediatric Surgeon and Clinical Chairman at Mater Dei Hospital. He received his formal education at the University of Malta, graduating in Medicine and Surgery in 1987, and later became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He worked and studied in a number of children’s hospitals in the United Kingdom, including Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, and also lectured medical students at the University of Malta.

Chris is married to Astrid, who is also a doctor specialising in paediatric primary care. They have three children, Dawn, Julian and Rafael, as well as three grandchildren.
