Dr Ian Borg

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism of the Republic of Malta

Dr Ian Borg is a Maltese politician who currently serves as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism.

Born in Dingli, Malta, Dr Borg’s passion for public service began early, leading him to pursue a Doctoral Degree in Laws at the University of Malta, which he completed in 2012, alongside a Diploma in Public Notarial Practice and a Bachelor’s Degree in Law.

At the age of 19, Dr Borg was elected Mayor of Dingli in 2005, making him one of Malta’s youngest mayors. His success at the local level propelled him into national politics, where he became Parliamentary Secretary for EU Funds and the 2017 EU Presidency. He played a pivotal role in achieving a 100% absorption rate of EU funds for the 2007–2013 period.

From 2017 to 2022, as Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects, Dr Borg spearheaded landmark projects, including the Kappara and Marsa Junction projects, the Central Link project, and the development of green spaces such as Ta’ Qali and Bengħajsa National Parks. He also introduced Malta’s first Metro Plan, signalling a transformative vision for public transport.

Since 2022, Dr Borg has served as Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, steering Malta’s international engagements and priorities. His tenure includes Malta’s Presidency of the United Nations Security Council (2023–2024) and serving as Chair-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe in 2024. In February 2024, he visited Ukraine to affirm Malta’s solidarity during the conflict.

Later in 2024, he was elected Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs of the Partit Laburista, subsequently becoming Deputy Prime Minister. In November 2024, he assumed the Tourism portfolio, adding a new dimension to his leadership.

Dr Borg has been recognised for his contributions to European and global politics, including being named to Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list (2013) and European Voice’s Top 40 Under 40 (2017). His diplomatic achievements include chairing the UN Security Council, advancing Malta’s economic and trade relations within the EU, and strengthening global partnerships across regions such as the Middle East, Africa and North America.

Looking ahead, Dr Borg will chair Malta’s Presidency of the Council of Europe in 2025, continuing to advocate for sustainable development, peace and international collaboration. His career exemplifies transformative leadership and a steadfast commitment to enhancing Malta’s role on the global stage.
